The Nones: Where They Came From, Who They Are, and Where They Are Going Customer Reviews

:
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Ragtime Pianist -- Christian evangelistic tract dishonestly marketed as social science : What starts as a sometimes banal recitation of survey data on the rise of the “nones” descends into ludicrous religious-tract material in which Burge, a Protestant clergyman deeply invested in preserving his industry, bemoans the horrific threat to everything good and worthwhile that is posed by growing societal dissent from religion. The overwhelming religious bias of this book is nowhere hinted at in its promotional materials, which amounts to a substantial swindle. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Jed Rothwell -- Mainly social science, not religion. Needs editing. : The author is a preacher and a social scientist. This book is mainly about social science. In the last 30 years, the U.S. has seen a sharp decline in the number of people who believe in organized religion and who attend church. The number of atheists and agnostics has risen, and the number of people who somewhat believe in God but have no religion in particular has risen even more. The author finds this heartbreaking, but he does not allow his feelings to get in the way of an objective, fact-based, social science analysis of what is happening, and why it is happening. You feel he is bending over backwards to be fair to atheists and other non-believers. I find this admirable. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2021 )
